Law Enforcement Officers Killed in the Line of Duty - 2005

These statistics represent preliminary information received by the FBI-CJIS, January through July, 2005

34 law enforcement officers have been killed due to criminal actions.
During the same period in 2004, 36 officers were slain.

17 were slain in the south
9 in the midwest
7 in the west
1 in the northeast

Of the 34 officers slain,
     8 were performing traffic stops
     7 were ambushed
     4 were investigating suspicious persons or circumstances
     4 were answering robbery calls
     3 were answering disturbance calls (1 being domestic)
     3 were involved in investigative activities
     2 were attempting other arrests
     2 were involved in tactical situations
     1 was handling a prisoner

Firearms were used in 31 of the killings (25 handguns, 4 shotguns, 2 rifles) and 3 vehicles.  13 officers were wearing protective vests.

There have been 34 separate incidents in which these 34 officers have been slain.  33 of the 34 incidents have been cleared by arrest or exceptional means.

26 law enforcement officers have been accidentally killed. During the same time period in 2004, 52 officers were accidentally killed.

In 2005, 15 officers were killed in automobile accidents,
     3 were struck by vehicles,
     2 were accidentally shot,
     2 were killed in aircraft accidents,
     2 officers drowned,
     1 officer was killed in a motorcycle accident,
     1 was fatally injured due to fall.

     9 deaths occurred in the south,
     9 in the midwest,
     3 in the northeast,
     3 in the west,
     2 in Puerto Rico.
